Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 bring biggest box office weekend of 2024

Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2 will tip over the $20 million mark this week after pulling in another $7.46 million over the weekend to take the top spot at the National Box Office.

Inside Out 2 had massive competition for its animation-movie-goer dollars during its second weekend with the launch of Despicable Me 4.

The spy-adventure comedy enjoyed the best-ever launch for the entire Despicable Me and Minions franchise, with its $7 million opening weekend falling just short of Inside Out 2’s $7.46 million takings.

Thanks to these two films, plus three other blockbusters still pulling big crowds, this weekend’s national box office was $18.71 million – the highest grossing weekend since the post-Christmas (December 28-31) haul of $20 million.

Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 were responsible for 76.84% of the entire national box office this weekend.

Those other blockbusters didn’t do too shabbily, though. In third place this week was Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which brought in a cool $1.62 million in its third week of release, bringing its total box office takings to $10.34 million.

The Garfield Movie snatched another $359,000, meaning the lasagne-loving kitty has brought in $7.86 million in Australian cinemas in four weeks.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga took $326,000 over its fifth weekend. This brings its cumulative box office to $9.72 million.

By taking $7.46 million in its second week (following a $9.11 million open) Inside Out 2 had the highest second-weekend ever for a Walt Disney Animation Studios/Pixar film, ahead of Finding Dory, which had $7.43 million.

Considering the film delivered the largest opening weekend since Barbie, it’s fair to say Pixar already has a smash on their hands.
