LGBTQIA+ publication QNews enters digital-only era

The announcement:

Australian LGBTQIA+ publication QNews has announced the next step in its 25-year history.

The publication, which launched in the year 2000, is transitioning to a digital-only model.

Announcing the move today, QNews publisher Richard Bakker said it was in response to a rapidly changing media industry.

“The reality is most people now get their news online. Readers have developed a preference for accessing our content digitally,” Bakker said.

“Advertisers are responding in kind and increasingly want to pay for display advertising online, not in print,” he said.

“While we love the print business, online is where we’re seeing growth and sales.

“We want to fully embrace that opportunity and focus on our website and social media channels.”

Bakker said the transition was also about making QNews “match fit” ahead of his upcoming retirement.

The veteran publisher plans to take a step back from the publication in the future and wants to see it continue in the best possible health.

“There are enormous costs involved in producing and distributing magazines – and they’re rapidly increasing,” he said.

“By creating a leaner, more economical and flexible product, we’re putting QNews in the best possible shape.”

The magazine is currently in discussions with a third party about an exciting new collaboration, which will further safeguard the longevity of the online magazine.

“I’m not at liberty to discuss this just yet as the deal isn’t finalised – but it’s a very exciting period for QNews,” Bakker said.

QNews was launched in Brisbane in December 2000 as a newsprint title distributed throughout Queensland and northern NSW.

It grew to encompass three full-colour, full-gloss magazines: one each in Queensland, NSW and Victoria.

The current issues of the magazines will be the last.

QNews will now continue at publishing at its website, qnews.com.au.

“I want to thank our many readers and advertisers for their support to date,” said Richard Bakker.

“We are so fortunate to be part of this beautiful LGBTQIA+ community.

“With the recent rise in anti-LGBTQIA+ threats and rhetoric, our community media is more important than ever.

“We look forward to continuing to serve you through our digital products,” he said.
