Nine restructures streaming and broadcasting leadership team

Nine has formalised the leadership team and structure for its recently created streaming and broadcasting division, bringing broadcast TV, Stan, and Nine Radio together under Amanda Laing.

The changes have cleaned up loose ends from Stan’s days as a separate entity and also removed the words ‘television’ and ‘TV’ entirely.

In January, Nine reset its operating model, splitting into three consumer-focused divisions: streaming and broadcast; publishing; and marketplaces – which includes Drive and Domain.

Former Foxtel executive Amanda Laing was brought in to head up the streaming and broadcast division, which wrapped together Stan, 9Now, broadcast TV, and radio. Today, a number of operational changes have been implemented.

From July 1, Michael Healy, former director of television, will be executive director of entertainment, overseeing locally produced programming across free-to-air, streaming BVOD channel 9Now, and Stan. Cailah Scobie will become executive director of entertainment content acquisitions.

Nine is also consolidating its broadcast sports offerings, with the production teams for Wide World of Sports and subscription service Stan Sport coming together under Nine’s director of sport, Brent Williams.

Hamish Turner, director of programming and 9Now, is now executive director of Channel 9, 9 multi-channels, and 9Now, tasked with the P+L and strategic goals of those products.

Stan’s acting managing director Dan Taylor is now executive director of Stan, responsible for the P+L of the streamer.

Nine Radio, which topped Sydney and Melbourne ratings this week, will continue under Tom Malone’s leadership.

Fiona Dear will remain head of news and current affairs — with plans to launch its Washington DC bureau within weeks.

Nine’s state managing directors in QLD (Kylie Blucher), WA (Clive Bingwa) and SA (Sean O’Brien) will also now report to Laing.

Finally, Laing will soon begin recruiting for two key newly created roles for the division: a chief strategy officer, and a chief marketing officer.

“There is immense opportunity to drive growth for the Nine Group and strong momentum already underway,” she said in a media release announcing the restructure.

“While Nine’s streaming and broadcast brands have enjoyed independent success, our strength lies in the power of the Nine Group and today’s changes are the first step in unlocking that potential.

“We’re lucky enough to have some of the industry’s top talent and I’m excited to leverage their experience across our streaming and broadcast brands.”

These changes are effective from July 1. All roles will report directly to Amanda Laing.
