Streaming service Stan to have ‘truly Australian character’, secures exclusive rights to Breaking Bad spin off
Australian comedienne Rebel Wilson will front a new marketing campaign across print, online and outdoor to drive uptake of the joint Nine Entertainment and Fairfax streaming brand Stan, and revealed a content agreement with Sony Pictures.
Stan will offer a range of local and international programming to subscribers for a fixed monthly fee tipped to be around $10, with no minimum term commitment, and the company confirming it has secured the exclusive rights to Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul ahead of a tipped February 2015 launch date, to coincide with the latter show’s US launch.
“(Stan) is really about simplicity and a clean palate”, said Mike Sneesby, CEO of StreamCo.”We tested a lot of different names and different categories. We wanted to move our name away from that technology platform of being a ‘view’, a ‘flix’, or a ‘tube’.
“We wanted to move to a brand name that consumers could actually associate with and actually have a character with. Stan is not going to be a character in itself but a brand that will build its own character in being truly Australian.”
Sound suspiciously like the “Dave” TV Brand from the UK, with modification.
It should launch about the same time as Netflix.
Both services combined will probably be less than the most basic Foxtel so good news for consumers.
Competition at last!
Why is a drug dealer being glorified by the media? Breaking Bad has been linked to a rise in backyard meth labs in Australia. We don’t need it.
‘Stan’ is also an Eminem track about a stalker who murders his pregnant girlfriend.
“Ex-boyfriend test” indeed.
Surely being Aussie it should be called Stevo, Trev, Big Keith, Shane, Robbo, Merv, Bruce, Dazza or Muzza?
Stan? Ex-boyfriend test? What on earth is he talking about?
Leading with Breaking Bad seems an odd choice to me. While I get that it stands for high quality programming and there’s a spin-off coming, the final episode aired over a year ago. Surely everyone who wants to see it has done by now?

Blaming Breaking Bad for the increase in ice usage/production in Australia is akin to blaming The Tales of Robin Hood for the carriage of deadly weapons or the incidence of police brutality, government corruption, siezure of private property, foreclosure, wrongful arrest and imprisonment, assault, abduction, hijacking, homelessness, gaol breaking, theft and burglary.
Story telling, ancient and modern, no matter how horrific, reflects the human condition. It doesn’t create it. Its role can be cathartic, cautionary, sometimes didactic, always engaging, and may even be thought provoking.
Breaking Bad is a reflection on the nature of corruption in a dog-eat-dog society. The USA has negligible social security, and a privatised health system run by rapacious private health insurers. In Australia we still have a public health system; barely adequate, under resourced and under threat as it is. There is also a social security net, albeit one being undermined by the very governments responsible for improving it. Funny old world, innit?
Sounds interesting and could give Quickflix a run for its money.
Hopefully ‘Stan’ will be available across multiple devices; mobile, tablet, laptop, gaming consoles and smart tvs….. as I assume Netflix would be also.
Leading with Breaking Bad suggests we are getting another Quickflix quality service with a different name. Once Netflix launches all these services are dead in the water.
So many new players entering this market, no wonder prices are getting cut left right and centre. Its going to be a crowded and competitive space. A bit of competition never hurt the consumer though!
“..effectively a clean palate”! Research budget didn’t cover Googling the name? He’d be delighted with his research team. Awesome digital skills!
Some lyrics from Stan:
“Hey Slim, that’s my girlfriend screaming in the trunk
but I didn’t slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I ain’t like you
cause if she suffocates she’ll suffer more, and then she’ll die too.”
So in no meeting anywhere, with any creative team, did anyone bring this up?
Classic.
comedienne? lol
