Sydney radio ratings: Alan Jones climbs to 17.6% audience share in breakfast

A boycott following comments by Alan Jones hurt Macquarie Media's advertising revenue, said Nine CEO Hugh Marks
Sydney’s breakfast radio king Alan Jones has made further gains in the third radio ratings survey of the year, climbing 1.2 percentage points to a 17.6% share of audience.
The dominance, which puts him higher than any rival on FM or AM, comes after he finally signed a new two-year contract with Macquarie Media to remain on Sydney’s 2GB and Brisbane’s 4BC.
The gain puts him even further ahead of his closest rivals Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson on ARN’s Kiis FM, who also climbed 0.4 points to 11.8%.
The Kyle and Jackie O Show was well ahead of its FM competitors, with the closest being ARN stablemates WS FM’s Amanda Keller and Brendan Jones, who climbed 0.9 points to an 8.8% share in the breakfast slot.
Over at Southern Cross Austero it was a mixed bag in the breakfast timeslot, with Triple M’s newly installed Lawrence “Moonman” Mooney climbing 0.7 points to a 5.6% share. SCA’s 2Day FM, however, suffered another blow, with the breakfast team of Grant Denyer, Ed Kavalee and Ash London falling 0.3 percentage points to 4.2%.
Nova 96.9’s breakfast team of Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli climbed 0.3 points to a 7.2% share, while Nova Entertainment’s other station Smooth 95.3 fell back 0.5 to 7.5%.
In the drive slot, which is measured as 4pm to 7pm, 2GB was also victorious, up from 10.2% last survey to 11.0%. Ben Fordham is on air from 3pm to 6pm, with Ross Greenwood’s Money News taking over from 6pm.
Nova’s Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold regained the top spot in drive in FM, climbing 1.5 points to a 9.9% share. Smooth FM’s Byron Webb, who is on air from 4pm to 8pm, slipped back after winning last survey’s FM drive battle. Webb is now in second, down 1.3 points to a 9.0% share.
2Day FM’s combination of Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little, followed by Dave Hughes and Kate Langbroek, fell back from 7.1% last survey to 5.8% this time around.
Overall in people aged 10 and over, 2GB won the Sydney radio battle, with a share of 14.8%, up from 14.5% last survey.
Smooth 95.3 remained on top of the FM market, climbing 0.5 points to a 10.0% share.
Odious little goblin.
Do these numbers contain the total audience figure?
Is AM listership reducing in total – thus meaning Alan is getting a larger portion of a smaller pie?
Please stop saying FM and AM “bandwidth”. There’s no such thing! Say “FM and AM dial”, or if you have to, “FM and AM band”. But not bandwidth. This keeps happening.
Jones climbs in share…how utterly depressing is that?
Why anyone would give Alan Jones their listening time is beyond me. He is a misogynist, a racist and a bully. I wouldn’t put one dollar to be associated with anything that has his name or fingerprints on it.
That said, with Kyle Sandilands still seemingly topping the charts I guess that’s the disgraceful state of radio these days. Sad.
Hi Bek,
Sorry to have stressed you out so much. This has been amended.

Hi, I’d have to say these radio ratings are unreliable as it’s only a small part of who listens to what? And how are the survey participants picked? Perhaps there’s biased aspects to it? I know many whom don’t listen to radio at all. I listen sometimes to ABC or Nova and several others. I Don’t listen to 2GB as most broadcaster’s there are rather childish and go on with their self interest rubbish and impinging their garbage on those who maybe listening.
I fully agree. I do not listen to 2GB broadcasters. Most are biased morons for their own interests.
it’s almost as if standing out for something…values/strong opinions/type of humour/behaviour types and being polarising is a good idea
weird, huh?

Is it the disgraceful state of radio or people working in this industry are actually out of touch of what Aussies want? Apparently want makes you sick, actually pleases many more.
Listening to Alan Jones is one thing, but actually admitting it?
Good old Alan, tappin’ in time with the music.
The GfK report lists his audience as 516,000 up from 447,000 the month prior.
If you work back from the %s listed in the article that implies the overall listener base grew from 2.7M to 2.9M.
A VERY Sydney-centric story. Great city, awful broadcasters. Why do they put up with it.
Not every Australian, with the ability to tune into a radio station (and who actually tunes into a radio station), is a progressive, empathetic, rational, critical thinking, human being. If they all were I doubt Alan Jones would have a job. In fact, he wouldn’t, or he would have to change his acerbic, spiteful tune.
Overall radio listenership in Australia is apparently up from 2.7million people to 2.9million. I find that very, very hard to believe. How are these stats put together?
They are the only two radio shows I switch between in the morning. Alan Jones for news and intelligent views.
Kyle & Jackie O for entertainment and a good laugh.
People may not like it. But Kyle & Jackie O and Alan Jones are the best breakfast radio personalities by a mile in Australia. And the ratings simply show that.
I dont get why all fm station are playing old music 1065 changed there playlist for what it was better when it was mix106.5 now I listen to wsfm101.7 all day I like the variety and the old stuff.
