Mumbrella is 17: Back to underdog status
Mumbrella’s annual birthday update is back. Founder Tim Burrowes looks back on a tough year of rebuilding
Welcome to the 17th annual instalment of “Publishing is getting harder”.
Actually, that’s not entirely true. There haven’t quite been 17 instalments. After we sold Mumbrella at the end of 2017, the finances were no longer mine to disclose. And after 2020, as I gradually stepped back from the business, our birthday updates came to a halt altogether.
You can view my previous instalments here:
- Our first post: Welcome to Mumbrella
- Year two: Mumbrella is two
- Year three: Mumbrella is three – thanks for supporting us
- Year four: Mumbrella is four (and a bit)
- Year five: Why I’m stepping down as Mumbrella editor to help grow the business
- Year six: Mumbrella is six – now we’ve got a history
- Year eight: Mumbrella is eight: Beating the burnout
- Year nine: Mumbrella is nine – We’ve joined the two commas club
- Year ten: Mumbrella is ten: Tailwinds and headwinds
- Year 11: Mumbrella is 11: Triumph and failure
- Year 12: Mumbrella is 12: The year we turned off the comments
So after a gap of five years, welcome back to the annual Mumbrella update. Our launch date of December 9, 2008 feels like a long time ago.
Congratulations, Tim. I still remember that first email in 2008. I think my reply went: “nice work, Tim. What’s the revenue model?” . You worked that one out pretty well. 💪
Congrats Tim to you and the team. It’s good to have you back (even as the underdog).
Big congrats to you, Tim, and the team with the progress on the Turnaround.
Good morning Tim
As always -hope everything goes well and sending good wishes to you from Peterborough UK
Congrats Tim and team. You’ve been my lunch read since day one of career. Would be a worse marketplace without you guys.
